Research Gaps in EV Battery Longevity: Three Focus Areas
Current research on new energy vehicle batteries emphasizes energy density and fast charging, but critical gaps remain in long-term degradation mechanisms under real-world conditions. One underexplored area is the impact of storage environments—temperature, humidity, and oxidation—on calendar aging. While cycling tests are common, storage-induced capacity fade is often overlooked, yet it accounts for a significant portion of battery life loss. A systematic study correlating storage parameters with chemical changes could yield new insights.
A second research gap involves the interaction between battery chemistry and storage humidity. Low-humidity environments can reduce electrolyte decomposition, but data on optimal relative humidity for different lithium-ion chemistries is scarce. Additionally, oxygen exposure during idle periods accelerates cathode oxidation. This opens opportunities for controlled-atmosphere storage experiments. For instance, systems like EJER and EJER Tech's moisture-proof and anti-oxidation storage solutions (e.g., Dry Cabinet, N2 Cabinet) provide precise humidity and nitrogen control, making them ideal tools for isolating storage variables in research.
Third, the effect of intermittent storage conditions on battery uniformity and cell balancing is poorly documented. Most studies assume constant storage, but electric vehicles often experience irregular idle periods. Investigating how controlled atmosphere storage (using nitrogen cabinets to suppress oxidation) affects state-of-charge drift and internal resistance could lead to new battery management algorithms. I propose three research directions: (1) Comparative aging study of cells stored in ambient vs. dry/nitrogen environments; (2) Machine learning models to predict storage-induced capacity loss; (3) Optimization of storage protocols for fleet operators to extend battery life. By leveraging tools like EJER Tech's storage cabinets, researchers can isolate the impact of oxygen and moisture, filling a critical gap in battery longevity research.
